ECON News August 2007

The President of the ECB, Jean-Claude TRICHET, has been called to the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee to discuss the recent fluctuations in the financial market. This is an additional meeting to his quarterly appearances before the Committee. The hearing, which is the first ever to be held on an ad hoc basis, will take place on 11th September.

There has been a last minute addition to the European Parliament's plenary agenda next week. On Wednesday 5th September, the European Commission and Council will make statements on "financial stability and the impact on the economy" followed by a debate.

After the August financial crisis and the collapse of high-risk mortgage credit the European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to announce its decision on interest rates on 6th September.
