South East MEP Sharon Bowles, has expressed dismay that a permit for the controversial waste incinerator in Newhaven has been issued by the Environment Agency.

Following a meeting on Friday that Sharon held with the Seaford Waste Forum, a local campaign group opposed to the incinerator, she said:

"Having discussed this issue with the local community it is clear that people feel angry and ignored by the county council. Almost everyone is Newhaven has opposed this site.

"Building this incinerator is not only extremely costly to the taxpayer and at odds with long-term recycling targets, but many aspects of it will soon be outdated.

"It is dismaying when a local authority can so directly go against the wishes of the entire community."

Following the meeting Sharon met with local Lib Dem MP, Norman Baker, to discuss the area's long term waste strategy.
