Buckinghamshire MEP Sharon Bowles has reacted with horror to the news that a farm near Amersham has been discovered to hold more than thirty dead horses, and many more in appalling conditions.

The RSPCA, along with other animal charities, went into the Amersham farm last week, and discovered horses and donkeys that were being kept in dire conditions, in the same pens as dead animals.

Sharon said "This is a tragic case. I have spoken to local residents and have received a number of letters - everyone is appalled. I am working hard in Europe to safeguard the welfare of all animals, but it is always sad to see cases like this where welfare has broken down."

"I am heartened to see that the charities involved in the rescue have been receiving enormous support from the public, but please do consider making a donation to help their work if you can. There were 80 horses and donkeys rescued from that farm who are still in desperate need of medical care, and these charities are working hard to help these animals."

A fund has been set up by the RSPCA to help with the care of the animals which were rescued. To donate call 0300 123 8484 or ring the RSPCA's South Bucks branch, which is also taking donations, on 01494 677775 or through www.southbucksrspca.org.uk You can also donate directly to the Horse Trust in Speen, who are treating a large group of the horses and donkeys, by calling 01494 488464 or visiting www.homeofrestforhorses.co.uk and following the links.
