Sharon Bowles Liberal Democrat South East MEP has today welcomed confirmation by the European Commission that the present UK system of the dual labelling of goods in pounds and ounces will continue indefinitely. Sharon, who has been campaigning on this issue commented today from Brussels;

"There had been reports that dual labelling would be phased out but I understand from the Commission that it had not taken a final decision.

"I am glad that the Commission has listened to people and said that the use of imperial measures can continue indefinitely.

"This is a victory for common sense, I have always said that if people want their produce in pounds and ounces or in pints they should be allowed it and if they want to buy in metric also they should be able to. This is all about freedom of choice.

"Of course the US still sues many of these units and it's worthwhile being fluent in both".
