VOTERS REJECT EU CONSTITUTION12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 2nd Jun 2005 Commenting on the French and the Dutch 'no' votes in the referendum on the European Constitution, Sharon Bowles, MEP for the South East said: "The French people sent a mixed message that amounts to little more than 'stop the world I want to get off!'" "It is a vote to resist the economic changes and reforms that are essential if Europe is to face up to the challenges of the modern world." "The Dutch public welcomed the opportunity to vote with a high turnout of almost 63%. Yet many voters questioned by journalists admitted they knew very little about the Constitution but felt frustrated at the lack of consultation." "It is important that openness and democratic accountability are strengthened. This could be done immediately by abolishing the "closed doors" system at Council of Ministers meetings. We must push forward greater understanding by, for a start, letting the public get to know and see the EU intimately." "The existing treaties remain in force and the EU will muddle on in the same old way, but the opportunities for Europe to broaden its democratic credentials and strengthen its global influence are in danger of being missed."
